When you live deep in the heart of Texas it's important to know how to draw a Texas Longhorn. The pride of Texans can grow up to 7 feet long, weigh as much as a Steinway grand piano, and in case my northern friends were wondering, yes you can ride one. They are known to be gentle and intelligent animals with very identifiable markings and long, statuesque horns.

My friend and fellow art teacher, Bert Mayse, demonstrated how to draw one of these distinctly Texan creatures using a projection screen, mat board and inexpensive color pencils.

Start with a white outline on dark colored mat board.

Use several different colors for a layered effect. I like to start with the lighter colors and then work my way into the dark shadows.

This is as far as we got with the demonstration, but you can already see how life like my Longhorn is turning out.
