1st graders learned how to construct a ship in a bottle from paper shapes. Warning: the original paper bottle was freehand and not very good. I cut out templates from tag board for each table of students to share and THEN we were ready to go.
After looking at images of real ships in a bottle, students got different shades of blue for their bottle cut out. Next, I handed out brown, white and red paper to cut out parts of the ship. We went over how the ship moves on sea using wind in their sails and how they all blow in the same direction. We also learned that portholes go in the hull of a ship and that walking a plank was punishment for bad pirates. In between giggles and lavish pirate stories we somehow finished this project.
