Harlem renassaince and Faith ringgold: LOE art club Celebrates Black History Month
Our February project celebrated Black History Month by studying artists work from the Harlem Renaissance, as well as art by Faith Ringgold. Our primary goal was to learn and appreciate an artists authentic experience through struggle and diversity. Among the highlighted artists of the Harlem Renaissance were Archibold Motley Jr., Aaron Douglas, James Van Der Zee, Laura Wheeler, Palmer Hayden and Jacob Lawrence. Students were randomly given artists work to reproduce using grids and Prismacolor pencils and then turn their work into a fan. In an effort for students to have a deeper cultural experience I played Jazz Age musicians like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington in the background. LOAC had their first art exhibit of 2016 on February 3rd, titled Fans of Black Art History.
